My parents, John and Anna Maria Zwahlen, had eight children, the oldest one a girl, Mary, then six boys, John, Joe, Hyrum, David, Fred and Sam, and then me. Two of the boys passed away before I was born. My parents were poor, but we always had plenty to eat because we raised our own crops, had our own cows and chickens, and always had a garden. When I was one year old, my dad went on a mission back to Switzerland, where he was born and had lived as a young man until joining the church. He converted many people to the gospel, including his only brother, Emanuel. Father built a small house next to mine. I took care of him for about twelve years. He passed away in 1939. Hyrum, Fred and I were all with him when he died.

Emma said of her mother: A lot of good things have been said about my dad, but my mother was a sweet and special person, too. She was always so good to me and was such a help to dad, always behind him in everything he would undertake to do. She was a hard worker, a good cook, and very clean in every way. She always kept a teakettle of boiling water on the stove. My mother passed away 12 Sep 1927. She was getting ready for bed, tying on her nightcap, when she fell over on the bed and was gone.

John Zwahlen and Anna Maria Schultheiss were married for fifty-two years. John wrote of his wife saying she was always prayerful, kind, helpfull to the poor, and set a great example. She served as a counselor in the Relief Society for ten years. She was always faithful in paying her tithes and offerings. She was always optomistic. She was a wonderful partner, mother and faithfull Latter-day Saint.
